PS5 Review
*Disclaimer: I was sent the code for this game on PS5 in return for a review, all opinions are mine and mine alone.
It's been a little while since I played a walking sim, it's the most relaxing type of game there is, you immerse yourself in the story that surrounds you, it's like walking through a picture book. Caligo starts off very dark, you find yourself in a strange closed-off room with some kind of orb floating not far from you, once you interact with it a character will lead you to where you need to go. It's clear from the start you've been here before; you just have no memory of this place, but with the help and guidance of another, that will soon change.
Caligo is a Latin word that means Darkness, or dimness of sight and my take on this is the protagonist relearning their memories which takes us into the dark side of their memories just by walking through each chapter. I understand how walking sims work, most have a lot more to offer in terms of exploration, Caligo is very set on one path, and there isn't really much else that stands out within the gameplay, only towards the end do you realise that there are two choices to choose from. At times one of the voices heard sounds a little ridiculous, it had some sort of voice distortion on top and it got a little boring and drawn out because of how slow they made his voice. However the other voices fit in perfectly well, our protagonist seemed to have a mild manner about him.
The protagonist's memories never seem to be wholly believable, he didn't seem convinced by them either, I guess this was part of the story otherwise, it wouldn't have made me feel this way. I'm not sure if the developers did this on purpose but I wasn't sure if the memories were from one lifetime or different lifetimes he had lived, they didn't seem to all fit in with one another nor with how his character sounded, he comes across very differently to how some of his memories portray him. NPCs are very few within this game, the focus is on you and your memories, the game has multiple chapters but walking through them drags at times.
What appealed to me most about Caligo is the visuals and atmosphere, each chapter has its own little story, and the cosy one is the chapter I loved the most. I spent more time looking around at the pretty plants and strange pieces of furniture scattered around the map. If it wasn't for the visuals I am not sure if I would have stuck with it as it felt like it was lacking, sure there was some element of collectables and you can achieve trophies but I would have liked to have taken a deeper dive into these vague memories instead of just skirting over them, I need a bit more depth.
Caligo originally came out in 2017 on Steam but has only just been released on consoles, if you enjoy walking sims this will be a very short one to play through, it took me around an hour to complete, it may take others longer if they choose to replay to get all the trophies/achievements. I personally wasn't paying any attention to them, I just wanted to play through the story.
Have a cosy day
