Nintendo Switch Review
*Disclaimer: I was sent the code for this game on PS5 in return for a review, all opinions are mine and mine alone.
As someone who actively finds fungi and mushrooms to photograph for my photography Instagram, I thought Land of Mushroom looked right up my street, on the outside, it's a cute and cosy game that looks very relaxing, which is what I was going for. The description states that players can dive into the land of mushrooms, where enchanting fungi come to life, from what I've seen, they are the most adorable little and large fungi I've seen in a while!
So what do you do? It's pretty simple, you drop each mushroom down into a basket, and they stack on top of each other. Match with the right fungi/mushrooms, and they will change to a different type, either making less or more room within the basket. I know this sounds and looks a lot like Suika Watermelon, but many games have come before with the same kind of idea, so the only unique selling point about Land of Mushrooms is that they use fungi instead of fruit. There is a moving hand above the basket that you use to drop the fungi into the basket, it looks a lot like you're foraging in the forest for fungi, the more you stack and play, the more achievements you can get, I won't lie people will probably get them pretty fast, this is more of a fun mobile game to me rather than a switch game, it's only £2.19 in the switch store which isn't bad for a game like this.
The name of the game is very misleading, it's not really a land of mushrooms, more so a basket of fungi, it is a very basic game to pass the time, which makes it hard to review as you're so limited unless you pay for add-ons. I personally won't be paying for these add-ons because the basic layout of the game doesn't offer players much sure, there is a single-player mode, Co-op, a small mode (play with smaller fungi) and there is a versus mode, but didn't give me the enthusiasm to want to play longer than I needed to. I don't want this to come across as a negative review, yet that's what it sounds like. I love cosy and relaxing games, just not when I'm forced to buy add-ons for a game that gives very little back to players.
Even though the gameplay isn't engaging, the artwork and music are very charming. I love anything cute, and I will always see if it's something that will interest me, much like Land of Mushrooms, younger kids will be more interested in a game like this. Co-op/versus mode would be great for a fun gaming night with friends just to see who is the fastest at stacking the mushrooms and not overspilling the basket. Overall, it was an endearing game, the developers should look into making more of the add-ons free for players so we get more of an idea of what else we can do without committing to paying straight away.
Have a cosy day
